What is Sodding?

“Sodding” refers to laying down rolls of grass on top of the soil for it to take root. “Sod” refers to the actual rolls of grass. The difference between sodding and seeding grass is that sod is pre-grown by a farmer and is pre-cut into mats. The rolls consist of grass and a layer of soil that is held together by its roots or biodegradable material. When you need to replace the grass on your lawn, sodding is recommended due to quicker results than seeding (typically takes 18 months for full results).

Many homeowners often choose to install new sod when they need new grass installation. An eye-catching lawn can enhance the appearance of your property and can also increase property value. In comparison to planting grass seeds, sodding also grows more evenly to create the perfect lawn. You can always contact ISR Gardening for your sod and lawn replacement needs.

Benefits of Sodding

Instant Lawn

There are many advantages to using sod instead of seeding. First, you’ll have an instant lawn that is ready for use right away! Seeding your lawn takes at least 18 months to grow and you’ll be stuck with a bare yard. Alternatively, sodding provides an instant change in aesthetics. The average size yard can be installed with sod within hours and depending on the weather conditions, it can fully be established in about two weeks after it’s placed. Aside from winter, sod can be installed during any season.

Less Water Usage

A seeded lawn needs to be watered at least four times a day to keep the ground moist to help with seed germination. A sodded lawn, on the other hand, only needs to be watered twice a day a couple of weeks after it’s planted.

Preventing Soil Erosion

If your yard becomes muddied during rain, consider installing sod. It will eliminate the problem of loose dirt and erosion because it’s already grown.

Added Value

The landscaping of your home is just as important as the interior. A healthy, green lawn will instantly add value to your home.

Fertilizing Your Sod

It’s important to take care of your new sod to ensure your lawn grows green and strong. It will need some time to settle in and establish roots before you fertilize it. For the first time, choose a low nitrogen fertilizer and wait for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks. Once you finish fertilizing, provide a generous amount of water. Wait for another 6 to 8 weeks before the second application and this time, we suggest adding a higher concentration of nitrogen fertilizer to keep your new sod landscaping healthy.

Frequently Asked Sodding Questions

When is the best time to install sod?

The best time to install new sod is during spring and fall. These seasons provide the most ideal weather conditions, unlike winter and summer, when the ground is frozen or when temperatures rise, requiring more watering.

How often should you water new sod?

New sod needs to stay hydrated for the first month of installation, so it may require more watering anywhere from 2 to 6 times a day.

Should you fertilize your sod after or before watering?

You should ensure the sod is thoroughly watered a day or two before applying fertilizer.

Can you lay new sod over old grass?

No. If you lay new sod on top of old grass, the new sod will never actually be able to reach the soil. The roots are prevented from doing so as they’re not able to penetrate the other side of the old grass and will die.
You might ask, ‘what if I put a layer of soil on top of old grass and then put on the new sod? Unfortunately, this doesn’t work either. The old grass will decompose and this process will release gas that is toxic to your new sod. Also by having that layer of grass under the soil, the roots of the new sod still won’t grow. It will create drainage issues.

Is new sod better than seeding for new grass installation?

There are different factors that can affect your choice between seeding new grass and sodding which includes:
Initial prices: Seeding new grass has lower upfront costs than sodding
Maintenance: Sodding required less maintenance than seeding grass, especially during the germination stage. You will need to water your grass more often on a daily basis, approx. 4 to 6 times a day to help with the germination process with seeding. Sodding requires watering about twice a day after it’s been planted.
Maturation time: Seeding new grass will take longer to mature,  approx. 18 months, leaving you with an empty soil bed that can be muddy and has higher chances of erosion. Sodding is already pre-cut, pre-grown grass that can be laid down immediately after you remove your old grass and takes approx. 2 weeks for it to establish roots
At the end of the day, if you need lawn replacement services, sodding is the most efficient solution which is why homeowners prefer it over planting grass seeds.
