While sod calculators can be convenient to get an estimate of the cost of a proposed sod installation, there are influential elements that have an impact on the overall cost.

The size of the lawn to be sodded will affect overall cost. Larger areas require more materials and more labour, but there may be the possibility of a discount for larger, bulk amounts of sod. For larger, irregular shaped areas, there may be an increase in labour costs to cut and shape sod around existing landscaping.

Varieties of lawn sod are available from $0.75 to $4.00 per square foot. The least pricey, like perennial ryegrass, is initially the best deal, but requires more watering and maintenance. Prices for sod at the other end of the scale may be more at the outset, but require less upkeep.

First, all debris and any existing plants or weeds need to be completely taken away. The soil needs to be tested to determine if it requires any assistance to help the sod take hold. Then, fresh, nutrient filled topsoil is deposited on the soil and then graded, from rough to fine, and gently rolled to end with a level finish. Finally, the soil is watered comprehensively to give the new sod the best chance to take hold.
