How The Sod Calculator Works

Our tested and proven sod calculator works with specific algorithms that produce a quote as accurately as possible. To receive an accurate quote, the steps are simple.

Calculate the Property Dimensions

Measure the area that will be receiving the new turf. Ideally, this will be a simple calculation of an area of a rectangle (length x width). If the area is an irregular shape, break the area down into smaller rectangles and then add the area calculations together at the end.

Submit for an Estimate

When the area has been calculated and necessary yard information has been given, submit your request for a free estimate. Our representatives will be back to you as soon as possible and no longer than 24 hours.

Schedule Your Sod Installation

Speak directly with our professional teams to get answers to your specific questions. Provide as much information as possible, so we can determine what recommendations will work best for your project. Is the area fully in the sun or does it have shade? Has fertilizer been used to assist previous growth? Is there wildlife presence in the area that could disturb new sod? All information can be helpful.

What’s Included in the Quote for Sod?

When you task us to do your project, our top level service includes the following in our quote:

  • Removal/disposal of original grass with a professional level sod cutter
  • Adding nourishing topsoil and carefully grading to prepare for the sod
  • Ensuring a level and smooth surface by rolling the prepared soil
  • Install the highest standard of sod and rolling again for maximum contact between soil and new sod
  • Gentle and thorough watering to promote root growth without disturbing the newly lain sod

While these items factor into the cost of installing new sod, estimates may have a 10-15% margin of error. Unforeseen details can influence the overall cost of your sodding project, such as:

  • Soil that has poor fertility and requires replacement or fertilization
  • Distance between project site and parking for sod delivery
  • Soil that requires higher than usual amounts of grading
  • Complications that cause labour time or project scope to increase

Benefits of Using a Sod Calculator?

It can be very beneficial for a homeowner to be able to calculate the amount of sod and the associated prices. This can be extremely helpful when checking between landscapers to determine their quantities and pricing. A few of the benefits include:

What Affects the Cost of Sod

While sod calculators can be convenient to get an estimate of the cost of a proposed sod installation, there are influential elements that have an impact on the overall cost.

These elements can have an impact on the materials, duration of the time needed to complete the project, or the amount of labour to complete the project.

The area that is to be sodded needs to be considered. Is it accessible to the machinery and pallets of sod required to complete the project? Will there be delivery issues that will involve increased labour?

The size of the lawn to be sodded will affect overall cost. Larger areas require more materials and more labour, but there may be the possibility of a discount for larger, bulk amounts of sod. For larger, irregular shaped areas, there may be an increase in labour costs to cut and shape sod around existing landscaping.

Varieties of lawn sod are available from $0.75 to $4.00 per square foot. The least pricey, like perennial ryegrass, is initially the best deal, but requires more watering and maintenance. Prices for sod at the other end of the scale may be more at the outset, but require less upkeep.

First, all debris and any existing plants or weeds need to be completely taken away. The soil needs to be tested to determine if it requires any assistance to help the sod take hold. Then, fresh, nutrient filled topsoil is deposited on the soil and then graded, from rough to fine, and gently rolled to end with a level finish. Finally, the soil is watered comprehensively to give the new sod the best chance to take hold.

Landscapers will have a standard rate for activities like lawn sodding, but there are factors that can increase labour costs. If the area is not easily accessible or has a number of obstructions to place sod around, labour costs can increase. Complex designs or working under a short timeline can also affect labour costs.
