Fall Cleanup in Vaughan: What It Includes and When to Book
Vaughan has a lot of mature trees. Streets in Woodbridge, Maple, Kleinburg and Thornhill are lined with maples and oaks, and every October and November those leaves end up on lawns, in garden beds and against fences. Left there over winter, they do real damage. A proper fall cleanup clears it all before the snow comes and leaves the yard ready for spring.
At ISR Gardening Inc., we do fall cleanups, lawn care and sod installation across Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Toronto and the surrounding GTA communities, and we have completed over 1,000 lawns. This guide covers what a fall cleanup should include, why it matters for your lawn, and how to time it.
Why Leaves Should Not Stay on the Lawn Over Winter
A thin layer of leaves looks harmless. Once it gets wet and the snow sits on top of it, it turns into a flat, soggy mat. Grass under that mat gets no light and very little air for months.
- Dead patches in spring. Grass smothered under wet leaves often comes out of winter yellow or bare, and those spots then fill in with weeds.
- Snow mould and fungus. Fungal spores survive the winter in fallen leaves and dead plant material. Removing that debris before the first snowfall cuts down how much of it is still there in April.
- Pests. Piles of leaves along fences and in beds give mice and insects a dry place to spend the winter, right next to your house.
- A bigger job in spring. Leaves that sit all winter break down into a heavy, wet layer that is harder to rake out than dry leaves in the fall.
What a Fall Cleanup Includes
Every yard is different, but a full fall cleanup in Vaughan usually covers the following.
1. Leaf removal from the lawn and beds
Leaves come off the lawn, out of the garden beds, from under shrubs and out of the corners along fences and the side of the house, where they tend to pile up. We bring a debris loader that vacuums the leaves and yard debris straight into our trailer, and we haul it all away. There are no leaf bags left at the curb.
2. Garden bed cleaning
Beds are cleared of leaves, spent annuals and weeds. Wet leaves sitting in a bed all winter can cause mould around the base of your plants, so this step matters as much as the lawn.
3. Cutting back perennials and pruning shrubs
Perennials that have finished for the year are cut back, and shrubs are pruned where it helps them get through winter. Not every plant should be cut in the fall, and some are better left until spring. We look at what is in your beds and trim accordingly.
4. Branches and yard debris
Fallen branches, twigs and storm debris are picked up and removed along with the leaves.
5. Last lawn cut of the season
A final mow before winter keeps the grass at a tidy height going into the snow. Grass left too long can mat down under snow and is more prone to mould.
6. Mulching and winter prep for the beds
Once the beds are clear, a fresh layer of mulch helps protect the soil and plant roots through freeze and thaw. Depending on your garden, we can also add fall fertilizer for the lawn. Our post on whether to apply fall fertilizer explains when it helps.
When to Book a Fall Cleanup in Vaughan
The best time is after most of the leaves have come down and before the ground is covered in snow. In Vaughan, the bulk of the leaves usually drop from late October into November, though a big maple next door can keep dropping for weeks after that.
One cleanup or two?
For most yards, one thorough visit late in the season is enough. Properties with many large trees on the lot or right beside it sometimes need two visits: one in late October to stop the lawn from getting buried, and a final one once the trees are bare.
Do not leave it until the snow
Once snow covers the yard, a cleanup is not possible until spring, and by then the damage under the leaves is already done. If your yard has a lot of trees, it is better to book early and plan a second pass than to wait for the last leaf.
Fall Cleanup and a New Lawn
If you had new sod installed this year, a fall cleanup matters even more. New sod has shallow roots going into its first winter, and a heavy mat of wet leaves on top of it can leave thin or dead patches by spring. Keep leaves off new sod through the fall. Doing It Yourself vs. Hiring a Crew
Raking a small yard with one or two trees is a manageable weekend job. Where it gets hard is a larger lot with mature trees, beds that need cutting back, and the question of where all those leaves go. Hauling bags to the curb and waiting for collection is slow, and wet leaves are heavy.
A crew with the right equipment can clear the lawn, clean the beds, cut back the garden and take every leaf away in one visit. It is also a good moment to have someone look at the lawn and beds and tell you what will need attention in spring.
Plan Ahead for Winter
Fall cleanup is the last yard job before winter. If you also need snow removal for your driveway, our guide on when to book snow removal in Vaughan covers how seasonal contracts work.
