Fall Cleanup in Richmond Hill: A Checklist to Finish Before the Snow

Richmond Hill is full of mature trees. Streets around Mill Pond, Bayview Hill, Oak Ridges and Langstaff are lined with maples, oaks and ash, and a lot of lots back onto ravines. Every fall that adds up to a lot of leaves on lawns, in garden beds and against fences. If they stay there all winter, you pay for it in April with thin grass, weeds and a messy garden.

At ISR Gardening Inc., we do fall cleanups, lawn care and sod installation across Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan, Toronto and the surrounding GTA communities, and we have completed over 1,000 lawns. This is the checklist we work from, so you can see what a full fall cleanup covers and decide whether to do it yourself or book a crew.

The Richmond Hill Fall Cleanup Checklist

1. Clear the leaves off the lawn

This is the one job that cannot wait. Wet leaves pressed under snow block light and air, and the grass underneath often comes out of winter yellow or bare. On a lot with large trees, expect to clear leaves more than once as the trees drop at different times.

2. Clean out the garden beds

Take out leaves, dead annuals and weeds. A bed packed with wet leaves holds moisture against the base of your plants all winter, which invites mould and gives mice a place to nest next to the house.

3. Cut back perennials and prune where it helps

Perennials that have finished for the year can be cut back. Some plants are better left standing until spring, so check what you have before you cut everything down. Shrubs only need pruning where it helps them get through winter, such as removing broken or crossing branches.

4. Pick up branches and yard debris

Walk the yard after any windy week. Fallen branches left on the lawn leave dead spots, and they are much easier to clear before the snow arrives.

5. Do the last cut of the season

A final mow keeps the grass at a tidy height going into winter. Long grass mats down under snow and is more likely to get snow mould.

6. Mulch the beds

Once the beds are clear, fresh mulch helps protect roots through freeze and thaw. See our guide on how to prepare your garden for winter for more on the beds, and our post on whether to apply fall fertilizer if you are thinking about feeding the lawn.

Where Do All the Leaves Go?

This is the part that slows most homeowners down. A big lot can produce a lot of leaves, and wet leaves are heavy. Bagging them and waiting for curbside collection takes several weekends on a large property.

When we do a fall cleanup, we use a debris loader that vacuums the leaves and yard debris straight into our trailer, and we haul everything away. Nothing is left at the curb for you to deal with.

When to Book a Fall Cleanup in Richmond Hill

The best window is after most of the leaves have come down and before the ground is covered in snow. In Richmond Hill, most of the leaves usually drop from late October into November, though a large tree on your lot or next door can keep dropping for weeks.

If your property has many large trees, plan for two visits: an earlier one to keep the lawn from being buried, and a final one once the trees are bare. Once snow covers the yard, a cleanup has to wait until spring, and by then the damage under the leaves is already done. If you also need a driveway plan for winter, read when to book snow removal before the first storm.

If You Have New Sod

New sod goes into its first winter with shallow roots. A thick mat of wet leaves can leave thin or dead patches by spring, so keep leaves off it through the fall. Our sod installation and lawn care page for Richmond Hill covers what we do on new lawns, and winter prep for new sod explains how to care for it through the cold months.

Do It Yourself or Hire a Crew?

A small yard with one or two trees is a manageable weekend job. Once you have a large lot, mature trees, beds to cut back and a pile of leaves to move, a crew with the right equipment saves you several weekends. It is also a good chance to have someone look at your lawn and beds and tell you what needs attention in spring.
