Fall Leaf Cleanup in Markham: How Many Visits Your Yard Needs and When to Book
Markham has some of the best-treed streets in the GTA. Around Markham Village, Unionville, Cornell and Berczy Village, maples, oaks and ash line the roads, and plenty of lots back onto ravines and parkland. That is great in July. In the fall it means one yard can take the leaves of three or four trees, some of them not even yours.
At ISR Gardening Inc., we do fall cleanups, lawn care and sod installation across Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Toronto and the surrounding GTA communities, and we have completed over 1,000 lawns. The question we hear most in the fall is simple: how many leaf cleanups does my yard actually need? This is how we answer it.

What Decides How Many Cleanups You Need
1. The number and size of the trees
One young street tree barely makes a dent. One mature silver maple can cover a whole front lawn in a single windy week. Count the big trees on your lot, then add the ones overhanging from next door.
2. The kind of trees
Maples tend to drop their leaves over a short stretch and in a big wave. Oaks hold on much longer, often well into November, and their leaves are tough and slow to break down. A yard with both usually needs a cleanup after each wave, not just one at the end.
3. Where your lot sits
A lot that backs onto a ravine, a woodlot or a park gets leaves blown in from trees you cannot control. Corner lots catch wind and the leaves that go with it. Newer subdivisions with small street trees are the easy case.
4. The condition of your lawn
A healthy lawn can handle a short stretch under a light layer of leaves. A thin or struggling lawn cannot. Wet leaves pressed flat block light and air, and the grass underneath often comes out of winter yellow or bare.
Typical Leaf Cleanup Plans for Markham Yards
One cleanup
This suits yards with a few young trees, common in newer parts of Cornell, Berczy Village and similar subdivisions. Book it after most of the leaves are down, so one visit takes care of the whole season.
Two cleanups
This is the most common plan for established streets with mature trees. The first visit comes at the peak of the leaf drop, to keep the lawn from being buried. The second comes once the last trees are bare, and it doubles as the full fall cleanup: beds cleared, perennials cut back, debris picked up and the last cut of the season.
Three cleanups
Ravine lots, properties with large oaks and yards that take leaves from a neighbour’s big trees can need a third visit. It sounds like a lot, but it costs less than repairing a lawn that spent the winter under a wet blanket of leaves.
Where All the Leaves Go
This is the part that slows most homeowners down. Wet leaves are heavy, and bagging them for curbside pickup can eat several weekends on a large lot. When we do a cleanup, we use a debris loader that vacuums the leaves and yard debris straight into our trailer, and we haul everything away. Nothing is left at the curb for you to deal with.
Can You Just Mulch the Leaves With the Mower?
Sometimes. A thin layer of dry leaves chopped by the mower can go back into the lawn. A thick layer, wet leaves, or leaves from big oaks are a different story: they mat down, smother the grass and leave you with a mess in spring. If you can still see the grass through the leaves after a pass with the mower, you are fine. If you cannot, the leaves need to come off.
Leaves on New Sod and Fresh Beds
New sod goes into its first winter with shallow roots, and a thick mat of wet leaves can leave thin or dead patches by spring. Keep leaves off it through the fall. Our post on winter prep for new sod in Markham covers the rest of the cold-weather care. Once the beds are clear, fresh mulch helps protect roots through freeze and thaw, and our mulch installation guide for Markham explains how to do it right. For the bigger picture on the garden, see how to prepare your garden for winter.
When to Book
The best window is after most of the leaves have come down and before the ground is covered in snow. Once snow covers the yard, a cleanup has to wait until spring, and by then the damage under the leaves is already done. If you plan on two or three visits, book the first one early so the crew has you on the route before the busy weeks. If you also need a plan for the driveway, read when to book snow removal before the first storm.
Neighbours in Vaughan and Richmond Hill face the same timing questions, and we have written those guides too.
Do It Yourself or Hire a Crew?
A small yard with one or two trees is a manageable weekend job. Once you have mature trees, beds to cut back and a pile of leaves to move more than once, a crew with the right equipment saves you several weekends. It is also a good chance to have someone look at your lawn and beds and tell you what needs attention in spring.
